Faux Filmstrips Fun

While I've seen layouts in magazines that use real negatives as a way to embellish the pages, I haven't been able to bring myself to do that. But when I heard about making a faux filmstrip? Ahhhhh, that sounded like it could be right up my alley. There are probably quite a few ways to create these beauties. I've illustrated two different versions in this article.

The following "So Cute" layout is my second page in my Book of Me. I bought a 9"x11" spiral bound scrapbook for this project. It's been a real challenge to make myself actually start a scrapbook about me, but now that I have I'm really enjoying it! I find myself making all kinds of notes for future pages. I was thrilled with the color this black cardstock bleached to. Bleach will interact differently with different types of cardstock. If you try this technique, experiment with different brands of cardstock until you find the look you want. You can also vary the bleached effect on cardstock by varying the strength of the bleach. Mixing it with different parts of water will produce different effects on the same piece of cardstock.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to creating faux filmstrips! I know the colors on my "Best Friends" layout are not traditional, but they are perfect for this page! Instead of creating the negative appearance with bleach and stamps, I thought it would be fun (and easy) to use stamped squares of colored cardstock. By clear embossing the fern images on the squares, it really helped make the images pop.

(*Tip - If you don't have black pigment ink to emboss, or black detail embossing powder, try this: First ink your stamp in Versamark, then in color ink of your choice. Now when you stamp, the Versamark will give the embossing powder something to stick to and will enable you to emboss the image! You can emboss with any dye ink pads using this technique, although I wouldn't recommend it if you have lots of images to stamp - it can get pretty inconvenient and time consuming having to clean your stamp in between each re-inking.)

The next time you're searching for a different way to embellish your layout, think about creating your own faux filmstrips! It's really easy and lots of fun! Don't forget that we'd love to see what you come up with, so please share it in the Reader's Gallery.
