Pixelated Pic, on purpose!

A high tech look for a modern world

Here is a neat little effect that gives a high-tech look to your photo without distorting it too much. We've all been spending so much time aging and distressing everything that I thought a little time travel forward would be a nice change of pace. I will use Adobe Photoshop CS2, but you should be able to duplicate it with other raster-based programs.

1. Open the photo you wish to use, make a duplicate copy and close the original. If the photo is "flattened" to a "Background" layer, double click the layer to make it "Layer 1".

2. Duplicate this layer 2 times (you'll have a total of 3 layers.) Name the top layer "Focus", the middle one "Original" and the bottom one "Pixel".

3. Turn off visibility for the top 2 layers ("Focus" and "Original"). Make "Pixel" layer active and open the Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic filter. For a high-res image, start with a setting around 100, more or less to taste. The image won't be recognizable at this point, you're just looking for a pleasing amount of squares. For a low-res image, like the example here, I used a setting of 20.

4. Click on the "Original" layer to make it visible as well. Change the layer blending mode to Luminosity and set the opacity to about 25%.

5. Click on the "Focus" layer to make it visible. Change its blending mode to Vivid Light and set the opacity to about 45%.

6. You can be done at this point, or you can apply quite a lot of sharpening to this top layer ("Focus"). In this example I used Unsharp Mask.

7. Add future oriented details for a modern layout.

Have fun and keep scrappin'!
