Creating Your Own Filmstrip Embellishment

This month, we are going to join Stacie at the movies (Let's Go To the Movies!) by making a filmstrip embellishment. These filmstrips are super-easy to make and are much more versatile than a downloaded one from the internet.

First, you open your photo-editing software and make the new file the size that you want your filmstrip to be. I made mine 4 by 1.5 inches. If your program gives you the option, you will want to make the background transparent. Next, add a new layer, and use the shape tool to make a black rectangle that takes up the entire space and click the "simplify" button on the menu bar so you can alter the shape.

In the next step, you will make holes down the sides of the filmstrip. This is the only time-consuming part of the project. First, select the rectangular marquee tool, and then draw a small rectangle. Make sure to place it where you want the first hole to go. Once you have outlined the first hole, hit the delete key. This will remove the back from that section of the filmstrip while leaving the outline visible.

Since the outline is still there, you can move it to make more holes that are the same size as the first one. Just move the outline and keep deleting all the way down both sides of the rectangle. Finally, go the to Select - Deselect to remove the outline.

Now all you have to do is add your photos and merge all of the layers. The filmstrip is complete.
