Altering Photos Part II: Saturation Levels

We've all seen them. Well all love them. Most of us have no idea how to go about getting the same result for ourselves. I'm talking about those fabulous black and white photos with just one element colorized. Be it a bride's bouquet or a child's bright blue eyes, one colorized element really makes a photo pop. Colorizing a photo is easy when using digital imaging software. There are quite a few ways to go about doing this. Here I will describe one of the easiest of them, which uses the Hue/Saturation option. The first thing you have to do is choose a picture that will lend itself to the alteration. This can sometimes be the most difficult part! Here is a great picture of another crewmember's beautiful daughter sitting in a field of bluebells.

This photo is perfect for altering the saturation levels since all of the colors are different. Now, go into the Enhance - Adjust Color -Hue/Saturation menu

The next step is to change the saturation levels of each individual color. Go to the Images tab. Now take the photo and drag it onto the photo space on the page.

In this photo, I used the following settings: Reds, Yellows, Greens = -74; Blues = 0; Cyans, Magentas = -100. This will make the bluebells stand out without making the rest of the image look flat.

And there we have a beautifully colorized image and it was quick and easy! You may have to play with the saturation levels a bit more depending on the original images in your photo, but the basic concept will not change.
