Buttons, Bows, Strings, & ThingsBy Alison Beachem & Helen NaylorBook Review by Sharon Caldwell - Ship's Scrapping Deck Librarian Scrapping Deck Crewmember If you are like me, you have a vast assortment of embellishments. But how often do you use them? Do you wish you had some ideas on how to use your stash? I found a wonderful book to help you get some of those items out of your stash and on your layouts. Buttons, Bows, Strings, & Things is full of layouts for you to "case." The book is divided into sections based on the type of embellishment. If you want ideas for using ribbon, you can just turn to the section on bows. There you will find a variety of ways to use bows and ribbon on your scrapbook pages. You can even learn how to make silk ribbon flowers! Wouldn't this be a wonderful embellishment for those layouts of that sweet little girl or your flower garden? I have always been challenged by beads and wire. I have a pretty collection of these items, but I never seem to find a way to use them on my layouts. In this book, ideas are presented combining the use of the two embellishments. You can thread beads on wire to make a cute top for a journaling box. Another idea is to use the wire to thread letter beads.
You don't have to sew to be able to use fibers. Fibers can be attached with glue or eyelets. You can also punch holes in your cardstock and just thread the fibers through to make a border on your page or journaling box.
For this month's layout, I decided to use the ideas in the fibers portion of the book. I wanted something that would highlight the pictures we took while visiting Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. I picked the color of the cardstock and fibers from the colors in the pictures. The use of the colors and fibers gives an easy colorblocked look to this layout. If you are searching for ideas to give your layouts the perfect finishing touches, this is the idea book for you. It will provide you with just that extra bit of inspiration that will make your next layout sizzle!
