ITALY

Get away and discover inspiration and muse in our Gallery as well as the ezine. We will share our designs with you and hope that you will share yours with us. Whether you are a first-time cruiser or a veteran sailor, the Gallery is your ultimate guide to sharing and inspiration. Just like a lighthouse guides ships through the fog, it is our hope that the ideas shared here will entice your senses and trigger the creative power within you.

Each month, we will pick a theme. For August, our port is Italy. We provide a theme to challenge you and our designers and provide you with more adventures for creativity. Please send all gallery submissions to editor@ssreflections.com -- we prefer to stick to the theme of the month, but will consider any artwork! The gallery is changed twice a month.

Next month we are going to Spain. Think olives, spicy, bulls, tradition, flamenco, bright colors, and hot weather. One of our crewmembers (Ramie) is in Spain right now!

Italy is known for it's wonderful food. I know I enjoy the "Americanized" versions, but the real thing is even better than you can imagine. I have traveled to the northern part of Italy, and the vineyards are beautiful to see on the mountainsides.

Some Facts about Italy - to get you in the mood from: CIA Publications

Italy is slightly larger than Arizona.

Languages: Italian (official), German (parts of Trentino-Alto Adige region are predominantly German speaking), French (small French-speaking minority in Valle d'Aosta region), Slovene (Slovene-speaking minority in the Trieste-Gorizia area)

Lonely Planet - You can visit Roman ruins, gawk at Renaissance art, stay in tiny medieval hill towns, go skiing in the Alps, explore the canals of Venice and gaze at beautiful churches. Naturally you can also indulge in the pleasures of la dolce vita: good food, good wine and improving your wardrobe.

Made-In-Italy - These are some of many exhibits taking place or scheduled for the immediate future, mostly in Italy. (Too bad we're late for this next one) March 5 through March 14, 2004 - Turin - Piazza Castello, Cioccolato - Torino, for chocoholics everywhere, this may not be a traditional "art" exhibit but it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Forget Switzerland and France, chocolate as we know it today was really developed over the centuries in Turin and surrounding Piemonte. The huge Piazza Castello in front of the Royal Palace is turned into a heavenly space for chocolate lovers, and the city's restaurants feature special chocolate dishes.

Travel It

Old Italian proverb: "You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."
