Inspiration Sparked by an Ad!Ramie Ahlstrom - Scrapping Deck Cruise DirectorDo you ever see something in your scrapbook stash (paper or digital) that sparks a flame under you and you just can’t leave it alone? It happened to me recently! I got an ad in my email about a digital kit that was on sale. I saw one paper in it that I loved, and it sparked an idea for an album I’ve been thinking about for awhile. My son, who’s just over six months old now, looks identical to my daughter when she was a baby. It’s almost spooky how alike they look. I’ve been planning, in my head, an album with facing pages of them at the same age. The digital paper in the kit from this ad was the perfect background for these pages! I downloaded the kit immediately and started in on some pages! The background started out orange. I love it in that color, but it doesn’t necessarily coordinate well with all the photos I planned to use for this album. It did work perfectly for this layout though!
To get the background color to match my photos, I had to challenge myself a bit. I had to go hunting for a tutorial or two and had to force myself to learn some new techniques. Now—you might be thinking “learning is a good thing”…and you are RIGHT, however, I’m one of those “stuck in rut because it’s comfortable here” types. I’d much rather just keep doing what I know since I know that it works!
I re-colored one layout by lowering the opacity of the top layer (the one with the numbers), and then adding a layer below it in another color, so that the combination of colors on the two layers would make the color I wanted. This took some time but seems to have yielded the best results.
To recolor this one, I played with the Hue and Saturation levels in the Enhance > Adjust Color function. This didn’t take quite as long, but I couldn’t easily get a color that I loved. The one I ended up with works perfectly well but isn’t quite what I had pictured in my head!
Recoloring has gotten a bit easier each time I’ve tried it. I came up with this background color by doing a combination of the above methods! I changed the hue and saturation levels some, and I lowered the opacity of the background paper.
I don’t have any real great tips or tricks for teaching you to recolor your backgrounds...except keep playing! You’ll come up with something that will work for you and for your layout, and that, my friends, is what matters!
