Using Acrylic Embellishments

Ramie Ahlstrom - Scrapping Deck Cruise Director

As the summer comes to an end, are you finding yourself hard pressed to get some scrapbook pages done? Are your pictures calling your name from the photo box that they're stored in? I know mine are, so I've picked up some acrylic embellishments, and matched them to some pictures!

Acrylic embellishments became quite the rage in scrapbooking this year. Everything from letters to laser cut phrases made from the hard plastic is being used on scrapbook pages around the world.

Acrylic embellishments are available from several vendors, and come in a very wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. You will easily find just about anything you could want, if you just hunt a little! You can get acrylic embellishments in transparent or solid colors, as well as in some metallic colors.

Most of the acrylics I have in my "collection" are a transparent color. They are the hardest to attach, because they are see through. I doubted some of the manufacturers of "clear-drying" adhesives, because I was scared they would show through, but to my surprise, they worked wonderfully on these plastic embellishments. I can't tell now that they are dry where the adhesive is, so I hope I don't have to remove any of them!!

Other adhesives that will work well for acrylic embellishments include pop dots and glue dots (for the non-transparent acrylics), and the Xyron sticker makers. You may also be able to tie acrylic embellishments onto your layout, or attach them by stringing ribbon or thread through them, as I've done on these layouts.

Because of their transparency, you can alter the color of acrylic embellishments, to make them better fit your layout. By laying a clear embellishment over colored cardstock, you can change the look of the embellishment to anything that fits your project. Using a light colored transparent embellishment over a different colored cardstock will allow you to change the "color" of the embellishment (i.e. laying a pastel yellow embellishment on blue cardstock will make the embellishment appear to be green, or a red embellishment over yellow cardstock will make it appear orange).

While I didn't do this intentionally for the article, you can see what I'm talking about in this layout.

Easy to use, easy to find, and it looks good. What more can you ask for from an embellishment?

I hope you've had a great, and productive, summer, and that you've enjoyed this issue of S.S. Reflections!
