Beyond The Obvious...Capture It.

Capture the true essence of your travels by taking photographs that go beyond the obvious. I like to take plenty of "touristy" photographs while on vacation, but I also like to take some interesting shots along the way.

I've gotten even more creative and more ambitious since I went digital. I had a ball one afternoon taking photographs during a drive to Chicago. I sat in the passenger seat snapping photographs as we rolled down the highway. Here are a few of my favorites from that day.

Capture The People
Traveling is partly about the destination, however the feel of a city truly comes from the people. Make sure you capture the people while you're traveling. When we were visiting New York City, there was a bride and groom walking through Times Square. Among the hustle and bustle, the double-decker buses, and all of the people buying theater tickets walked a beautiful bride in a crisp white dress. How could you miss capturing this on film?

Capture The Details
I recently had some extra time after a business meeting and decided to walk around the downtown area. As I was walking around their lovely Capitol area, I decided to take in the details of my surroundings. I thought about what photographs I would normally take and then looked beyond them. I focused on the details of the buildings and the streets.

This little nook on the side of the street caught my attention, so I photographed it. I took shots from near to far, and this is how the page turned out.

Capture The Extreme
You've probably never thought about taking pictures of your feet while you're walking…but I did. I was walking along staring down at the pavement noticing how interesting the changes were from place to place. So, I photographed it. Check it out:

Here are a few ideas for interesting photo shoots - either while traveling or while at home in your own city:
  • Photograph while driving (well, you ride while someone else drives!)
  • Think about somewhere you drive often, and the next time you drive that same very familiar road, focus on the details you pass --- if you see something or someone interesting, stop and get a photo
  • Take photographs from a lower level - snap a few as you cross the street or walk down the sidewalk --- you never know what you'll see
  • Get close - capture the details of a building and it's architecture
