Fabricadabra Material Magic

with Sandra McCall

Book Review by Judy Cantrell

The talented Sandra McCall teaches how to make a variety of projects on this educational DVD from PageSage. It has over two hours of projects, tips, and ideas to spark your imagination. You will love Sandra’s soft spoken voice as she inspires you to create your own works of art using stamps, fabric and paint. Sandra says you don’t have to start with any particular color just something that is pleasing to the eye. Before each project she will share what products and tools are needed for each project. She teaches you a variety of different projects; you can make muslin pouches and beads, beautiful silk velvet scarf projects, and decorate a pre-made article of clothing with rubber stamps and beads. Sandra also teaches basic jewelry making, soldering, and how to make your own jump rings.

Need more ideas; you will find endless inspiration in the Interactive Gallery where you will find more than 50 pieces of Sandra’s artwork. While there you can jump directly to the technique of your choice with a touch of a button. Enjoy a front row seat as she teaches you how to make the following projects:

  • Painted Muslin
  • Tiny Tomes
  • Fabric Beads
  • Simply Satchels
  • Fabric Charms
  • Velvet Scarves
  • Embellished Ensemble

The first thing Sandra illustrates is the transformation of a piece of muslin into a work of art. I was so impressed I pushed the pause button, got out my supplies, and within an hour I made several pieces of stamped fabric. Here are two pieces of my fabric which I will use to make my examples below:

Sandra made the cutest little book for her first project she calls “Tiny Tomes.” It was so easy to make following her instructions. I love the technique for the book closure; I will use it again on other books. Take a look:

I had to visit my craft store to pick up supplies for my next project that Sandra calls “Fabric Beads.” She shares what to do with several kinds of wooden beads. The one that she made into a bracelet from beads and tiny wooden spools is the one I will share with you. I can’t believe how easy it was to make. With just a few supplies, tools and some of my painted muslin, I made this bracelet in a little over an hour. Here is my example:

The next project that Sandra shares is the “Fabric Satchel.” Sandra’s samples are gorgeous! With all of her help showing how to do each part of the pouch, it is so easy to make. You will love all the inspiration in the gallery showing ideas for different pouches.

I had a lot of fun making my pouch. It was helpful that I had a fabric stash in a color that would go best with my stamped muslin. Although Sandra didn’t use a metal flower on her pouch, I think this is just what my pouch needed to make it look fabulous!

Sandra say’s “hold onto those little scraps,” this is where you will use them to make more “Fabric Beads.” This was a fun project seeing what those little scraps would look like on my wooden beads. Sandra shares what type of glue works best for this project. As Sandra demonstrates making her beads, I was thinking what else can I cover with fabric. I’m sure when you are looking at this DVD you can come up with other ideas, too. Here’s a tip: I didn’t notice until I mounted the beads on my pouch that the beads looked different in size. If that bothers you, just make sure they look the same in size before you place the fabric beads on your pouch.

The other projects on this DVD you will want to see are Sandra’s stunning silk scarf where she uses stamps and beads, another project where she transforms a plain outfit into a great looking outfit, and another project where she uses a bezel, fabric, beads, and her soldering tools to make a fabulous bracelet. You will also want to look in the gallery to get more ideas.

After you look at all of Sandra’s art projects in the gallery, you will have to see what is in the extras where you will find a bead tray to make, bloopers (these are always fun to watch), stamps used in the projects, and metric conversions. I hope you will find some creative inspiration when you purchase your copy of Fabricadabra Material Magic with Sandra McCall.
