Daddy’s Girl: Using Texture in a Layout

Elizabeth Harwick - Digital Deck Crewmember

I love using photos in scrapbooking. It may be because I am a photographer, or it may be that I’m just not that great at making all the creative little touches on the pages that the rest of my crewmates are so talented at. For whatever reason, I am constantly looking for new ways in which to be able to use the photos without having them look like the same layout over and over again.

My family and I had a beautiful day at a gorgeous park and I wound up with several photos that I wanted to use for a scrapbook page. To begin, I enlarged and cropped the photo I wanted to use for the background to a standard 12x12 size.

In my graphics program, which in this case happened to be Photoshop Elements, I selected the photo (which is now the background) and used the canvas texture to add dimension.

I then individually opened and edited each of the additional pictures I wanted to use. In this case, I wanted them all to be a standard square to mimic the background and to tie it all together. I copied and pasted each one onto the original background and sized as needed.

I noticed when I placed the clear photos above the textured background that the background seemed to fade out – I decided to add a divider to give each their individual space and allow some focus to fall on the large background image. I opened, then copied and pasted the ribbon into the image as I did with the individual photos.

To give more dimension to the layout I selected each element and, using the layer filter, I added a small drop shadow to each.
I then finished by adding the title to the page using the text tool and selecting the scriptina font. After adding the text, I noticed that it looked too stark against the warm and fuzzy images. By selecting the text and using a layer texture filter, I added the straw texture – I think several of the filters would have worked nicely but the straw seemed to fit best with a day at the park. Using the Stencil font, I added the wording on top of the ribbon.

I finished by changing the font to SBC Love Mom, which is a constant that I use for journaling or dating on every layout because it closely resembles my handwriting.

I believe that the added step of creating texture has added more interest and beauty to an otherwise relatively simple layout.

Thanks so much for joining me on our journey!
