Little Frames

I chose to focus this month on an embellishment that is pretty easy to find in scrapbooking and craft stores and has been around awhile. I'm talking about the small frames you can find; whether metal frames, paper, slide mounts, or other kinds of frames, there are a lot of options. These are a great way to focus your eye on something that you want to emphasize in a layout.

The most obvious use for these is to use them with photos. Say you have photos of a group of people taken at a distance - as a whole picture it just doesn't feel like it works on your page. But by cropping the photo down to just the person/people, you can use these photos in a small frame to focus on individual people. In this case, I had two very similar photos, and I really wanted to focus on the happiness of the bride in the second photo. You could either trim the photo to fit behind the frame, or just lay the frame on top of the photo to show the entire picture, while moving the eye to the most important part!

Frames don't always have to be used for photos. You can put embellishments, journaling, titles, or quotes inside a frame as well.

Some frames are so pretty you can just adhere several of them to your pages with nothing in them! Try hanging a frame from a brad and wire like you would a picture on a wall! Pebbles came out with a new frame that is also a shaker; you can open it and put little embellishments inside. You can put a small photo inside too, but for my page I chose to just place the frame, with the beads and little hearts I chose to use, right on the page.

Aside from what to put the frames around, you can also expand beyond the basics and alter the frames. The metal frames work great with acrylic paints! If you have a frame with engraved or embossed designs, try to paint over it and wipe it off lightly, leaving paint in the grooves. Metallic rubons work very nicely to subtly change the look of the frame.

You can also add items directly to the face of the frame; beads, buttons, wire, fiber, twill, ribbon, or anything else you can think of! Wrap the frame in patterned paper, vellum, or other textured papers for an interesting look.

I hope this gives you more ideas for using all the fun little frames available or ones you choose to make yourself!
