Welcome to Hollywood...a place like nowhere else. Hollywood, known as the entertainment capital of the world, is home to glitz and glamour, famous actors and actresses, studios, nightclubs, hotels, and shopping. It is one of the most exciting and mythical cities where millions flock to meet the stars, to become a star, or to simply gaze at the stars. It is one of most talked about towns in the world. I hope you will enjoy your stroll down the Walk of Fame, shopping on Rodeo Drive or Sunset Strip, and gazing at the amazing mansions in Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. Hollywood is known as the town where people come for the name and stay in hopes to gain fame.
During our tour of Hollywood we are stopping off to visit Twisted Paper, a company with the most amazing background papers and vintage image CDs. TwistedPapers is owned by Russell White and Stan Pekarsky and located in Warren, Pennsylvania. Russell and Stan have backgrounds in collage, book making, polymer clay, and art stamping and are avid collectors of art, books, postage stamps, and rubber stamps
Twisted Papers offers a wide range of preprinted background art on eight CDs. The background art, never before seen, was created in the 1980’s for the textiles industry. The background art is in professional quality, high resolution .tiff or .jpg files that can be printed directly from the CD onto cardstock, vellum, canvas, transparencies, or photo paper. The CDs can be purchased individually for less than $25 or as a set of eight for less than $175. Twisted Papers also carries vintage collage image CDs. The collage images include vintage advertisements, vintage Christmas art, vintage postcards, vintage Valentine art, vintage Valentines, and Victorian Scrap. The images are professional quality high resolution .tiff or .jpg files that can be printed directly from the CD or imported directly from CD into a wide range of image manipulation programs. The CDs can be purchased individually for less than $25. Twisted Papers carries archival collage sheets in themes such as Holiday, Valentine, Risqué, and Victorian Scrap. The images can be used for stamping, scrapping, altered art, ATC, and decoupage. The collage sheets cost less than $4. They carry a wide variety of ephemera such a vintage buttons, costume jewelry, compacts, glasses, watch crystals, vintage music, cigar boxes, postcards, bottle caps, Christmas ornaments and seals.
The backgrounds on these CDs are artistic, art nouveau, and abstract art themes with the colors that are bright and bold. The CDs are amazing and having the background papers right at my fingertips is great. I am very impressed with the variety and quality of the product. However, I found the colors and styles to be ones that I would not have chosen personally because I like designing vintage products with muted, aged and distressed art. Since the color and styles were not what I would have chosen personally, I found it to be a wonderful, personal challenge and experience to create using products that are out of the norm for me. The idea of having background papers and collage images on CD is a great one and there are some advantages including the background papers or collage images can be reprinted if needed, a background or image can be changed at the touch of a key, and having a wide variety of background papers or collage images on CD reduces trips to the store to purchase scrapbook paper or stamps.
My first project is a decoupage box with gorgeous trim as the finishing touch. I used chalk and ink to color in the black and white collage image before adhering it to my decoupaged box. It was fun to look through the various CDs before choosing the background art.
My second project is an altered tag. A plain manila tag from an office supply store became a great canvas for the background art in such rich colors. In addition, I added some glitz to give it a beautiful shimmer and to enhance the beautiful collage image.
For my last project, I used a variety of background art to create three Artist Trading Cards with each having a variation of the same theme. I was amazed at how different the cards looked by changing the background art.
It was a fantastic experience to have all of this available at my fingertips and the possibilities are amazing and endless.
