Ship's Captain

After spending an awesome month in the Caribbean I'm excited to head into the Gulf of Mexico. This is the fun part of cruising, we get to sample and share all sorts of Southwest designs and ideas! We have lots of exciting things to tell you about this month! Last month we created our page to page links to make it so much easier for you to navigate through the magazine and this month we are launching our brand new Digital Deck! The Digital Deck will be expanding in the upcoming months so you'll want to keep an eye on it! You will also notice that we have a new Introduction page for each Deck. You can click on each ships wheel and read a brief bio of each of our crewmembers, you can link directly to their column or send them an email. Each intro page does link to the next article to be featured just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link.

If you are coming to the Midwest Scrapbook Convention March 11-12 you will actually get to meet some of your favorite designers! We will have our FIRST booth set up at this awesome convention! Stewart Superior will be sending Beverly Hamilton to do demos with their hot new products at our booth and we will have a prize drawing both Friday and Saturday just for signing up for our bi-monthly newsletter! So, plan to stop by and say hi! You can find us in booth number 1. We'll have some of the designs featured in our magazine for you to see in person! Please plan to stop by and say Hello!

We had so many beautiful submissions to our February Digital Layout Contest! It is with great pleasure that we announce that Phyllis Capp is our FIRST Place Winner! Phyllis has won a $50 gift certificate for Bound2Remember services! Our SECOND place winner is Mary G. Kerr! Mary has won a $25 gift certificate toward Bound2Remember services. Our THIRD place winner is Debbie Febriany!! Debbie won a $10 gift certificate toward Bound2Remember services! If you'd like to see Mary and Debbie's photos, please click here. All the winning photos are displayed on the Contest page! Phyllis' winning photo will be February in the 2006 calendar! CONGRATULATIONS to all three of our winners! Our March contest category is a stamped art contest using Green! Think early Spring, St. Patrick's Day and all things GREEN!

Please size your image to 475 pixels (longest side) for submitting to the contest. We need it in a much smaller size for the magazine. But, be sure to keep your image in the proper scan size for the calendar if you win! So, you'll have 2 sizes for your image. Both are important! We need to have your submissions sent to editorialsubmission@ssreflections.com with your permission to publish and print your submission. Please also include your name, address, phone number and products used if you know them!

Did you know that we send out a bi-monthly newsletter when we change our Reader's Gallery each month? We are thrilled to welcome Tim Holtz back as our Celebrity Headliner this month! We had so much fun with Tim last July we couldn't wait to get him back and when Tim found out we were in the Southwest this month he couldn't wait to come back for another cruise! Of course, Ranger has come out with all sorts of awesome new products and you can hear all about them here! Tim has lots to share with us.

Lori Elkins Solomon of Scrapbook Premier is back with us this month with a feature on "Visual Literacy: Learning to Read and Write through Scrapbooking - By Tori Nelson". The term “literacy” is most commonly used to describe the ability to read and write; in other words, the ability to understand and utilize the written word. Journaling in a scrapbook, for example, requires a certain level of literacy. But journaling is not the only component of scrapbooks that helps develop children’s literacy skills. Recently, experts in the field of education have expanded the term “literacy” to include visual means of communication such as photography. This skill is referred to as “visual literacy.”

In our VIP Lounge this month we are featuring Color An Angel. Most images and designs used to create scrapbooking materials reflect an American culture and Caucasian images. Until just recently, there were no products that reflected various cultures and images of ethnic persuasion. One year ago, Color an Angel launched its line of products targeted to Asians, African-Americans and Latinos. The company has obviously done its research on the different cultures in order to design stickers and papers that accurately reflect each culture. The company’s mission is to offer women ethnically diverse products, but also to educate women of all cultures on intermediate and advanced scrapbooking techniques as well as products.

Sarah Heidt has been a part of S.S. Reflections for a very long time now and we are thrilled to tell you that our Designer’s Challenge this month was sponsored by Sarah Heidt Photo Crafts! Sarah has an awesome collection of embellishments for your pages. Sarah Heidt Photocraft's products include script die cuts, acid-free plastic embellishments and charms, featherweight mosaic tiles, word and letter tiles, and ribbon sliders. You're going to love what the crew has created!
