SSR is visiting Hong Kong!

I am so excited to tell you that we have a very special introduction to Hong Kong for you this month! Aparna Sordi has joined the SSR crew and is sharing her home with us for her first official issue! So, without any further delay let me share with you what makes Hong Kong so special to Aparna!

About Hong Kong by Aparna...

First off I would like to list some reasons why I really like living in Hong Kong:

  • Low taxes – only 15% personal income tax and 16.5% corporate tax. There are no applied taxes, no capital gains tax, no hidden taxes, and no import duties – nothing. It is a fiscal heaven.
  • Low crime rate. Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world. The crime rate of Hong Kong is the lowest of all metropolitan cities. Homicide here (a good measure of how safe any city is) is 1.23 homicides per 100,000. Compare that with New York (16.1) or Chicago (29.9)
  • Melting Pot: While this is a Chinese city, Hong Kong has a large population of expatriates and there is an amazing mixing of cultures and races in this city. Every single non-Chinese family we know is inter-racial, with neither religion nor language proving to be a boundary. However, one can also easily find very traditional Chinese lifestyles in this metropolitan city.
  • Lifestyle: One has so many choices, be it food, shopping, culture. In my home we prepare Italian, Indian, Thai and Chinese food with regularity. And all from scratch using the freshest and most authentic of ingredients.
  • Schooling is at level with the best education worldwide. Due to its secure environment children in HK are less exposed to drugs and other vices. However, financial conditions of the family permitting, students prefer to leave Hong Kong after school to pursue higher education in places like the US, Australian, Canada and the UK.
  • We have efficient public transportation, superb roads, great hospitals and a very efficient government (compared to the other countries that I have lived in and had experience with).

Hong Kong is divided into three parts: the actual island of Hong Kong, the peninsula of Kowloon and the New Territories. All these together are referred to as the HKSAR or the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong: The name means ‘fragrant harbor’ in Cantonese, the local dialect of the Chinese language. Hongkongers usually refer to it simply as ‘the island’. The island was captured by the British during the 1940s. This island has the highest concentration of international businesses with ‘Central’ being the main office area. The Victoria peak, also called ‘The Peak’ is worth a visit via the peak Tram. And surprisingly, even though it has a population density of 91,500 / square mile, the island has many nature parks where one can go for hikes.

Kowloon: This is the part of the land just across the Victoria harbor from the Hong Kong Island. The name means ‘nine peaks’. The area actually comprises of eight real mountain peaks. Emperor Bing was shown respect by being referred to as the ninth peak. Because HKSAR is such a hilly terrain, landslides are a common occurrence and one sees large mountain sides, from where roads have been cut out, covered with cement and then cleverly camouflaged in green plants. Kowloon was also part of the territory ceded to the British under the Treaty of Nanking, 1842.

New Territories: All the areas of HKSAR, except HK Island, Kowloon & Stonecutters Island are part of the New Territories or NT. Lantau Island, where Hong Kong built its superb new airport is also part of the New Territories. NT is packed with beaches, country parks and more than 200 outlying islands that afford a diverse range of places to escape to from the humdrum of daily life. To make their position in South China more secure, in 1898 the British leased this area from the Qing rulers for 99 years. When the lease to the New Territories expired in 1997, the UK found it easiest to give up sovereignty of HK Island and Kowloon as well – everything was handed over to China. However the HKSAR would not become communist – it would have political autonomy up to a certain degree for the next 50 years. Currently on July 1 Hong Kong celebrates ‘Handover Day’.

For now I cannot think of living anywhere but Hong Kong! Everything, from its lenient taxes to the simple bureaucracy to the vibrancy of life here, has spoilt me thoroughly!

    Happy New Year!

    Aparna

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me at editor@ssreflections.com and I will do all I can to help! If you applied once before don't hesitate to apply again.

We've shared all the exciting features on the Editorial Deck above so we will no longer include it in the "News On Deck" feature of the Welcome page.

    SCRAPPING DECK

Let's start with the Scrapping Deck:

Aparna will be sharing a gallery of her layouts with us each month! If you have any questions about any of Aparna's layouts please don't hesitate to email her personally. I just know you will love all that Aparna creates for you!

Kelli is back with SSR after taking a couple of years off! Kelli started her own business a few years ago and sold her half to her partner just before the birth of her daughter Sam! We are very honored to have Kelli back with us now that life is settling down a bit for her! This month Kelli is sharing a specail gallery of wedding layouts she created of her nephew and his wife! Just check out the layout above for a taste of what Kelli is creating!

    DIGITAL DECK

On our Digital Deck this month:

Cricket is taking the plunge and learning Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 and is inviting you to join her as she explores this software! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn the basics of digital scrapbooking with this fabulous software! Of course, Cricket isn't new to digital scrapbooking but she makes it so easy to learn how to start!

Ramie has been working on all sorts of fabulous digital layouts and is sharing a special gallery of some of her work with you! You won't want to miss these fabulous layouts of my favorite subjects...Ashleigh and Aiden!

Tracy has created a tutorial for you this month on how to create your own faux wax seal digitally! The fabulous layout to the right is the finished product of this easy technique for you to learn! We'd love to see your layouts on the Photo Gallery using this awesome technique!

Tricia is brave enough to share her New Years Resolutions with all of you! So, lets join Tricia and start 2008 by getting organized!

    STAMPING ARTS DECK

Now it's time for the Stamping Art Deck!

Cindy Seabright has brought our trip to Hong Kong, China to heart and has created a very special “lu1quin3 nengajo” green card with a gorgeous Asian magnolias.

Flo is getting almost grungy this month and having just way too much fun! I want to go and play at Flo's house! Be sure to check out these fabulous thank you cards that Flo has created and print them out for yourself and share your own versions with us on the Reader's Gallery!

Judy's DVD review this month is on "Millefiori Story" with Judy Belcher! Millefiori cane work is a time-honored glassmaking technique that easily translates into polymer clay. Judy offers you the most basic to more intricate designs to inspire you; plus, she teaches you how to create jewelry, home décor and more. Just in case you can't wait until you see the fabulous samples Judy has made take a look to the above right!

    ALTERED ARTS DECK

Now for the news on the Altered Arts Deck!

Michaela is going to do special year long features using playing cards! The first project she has made using playing cards was this New Year’s Eve scorecard for a fun night of games and playing cards with friends! Just take a look to the right to see Michaela's sample!

Wendy is starting the New Year with a brand new Art Journal! Her first page is about her New Years Resolutions and we're going to hold Wendy to them since she's made them public!!

    COMMUNICATIONS DECK

Our Interactive Reader's Gallery! is not just for showcasing your scanned images, its also for your photos and your digital layouts! We want to see everything that you are proud of! So, come on board and share what you are most proud of! I rarely share projects that I do as I don't seem to have much time to create these days which is frustrating because I created SSR so I could combine stamping and scrapping in my projects as they truly belong together and I was told I wasn't allowed to do that for a magazine I used to design for. The message board to the right was created by me! I made this gift for my friend Bunnie in a Secret Santa exchange we had on a small friends yahoo group we belong to. The only requirement was that the gifts had to be homemade! This was such a fun swap!

So, don't be shy...share your ideas with us!! You just never know what we'll feature next or who we'll ask to be a guest designer on SSR!! IT COULD BE YOU!!! The photo gallery is so much fun and filled with fantastic designs...stamped art, digital layouts and scrapped layouts not to mention the photo gallery! You can upload all the designs that you want to share with us ANYTIME you'd like! We have an opportunity to make comments and talk about the products you used and the techniques! You'll want to definitely add this to your favorites and come back often!

    FINAL THOUGHTS

As we begin 2008 with a bang. I ask that you keep our own Wendy in your prayers as she shared with the Ezine group a couple of weeks ago that she was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. As Wendy shared her story with the Ezine Yahoo Group I wanted to share her request with you in my Final Thoughts space.

Wendy found a pink themed journal which also has clear pocket page inserts and she would love to have some pages from other people to insert into these pockets too. All of us at SSR want to help Wendy in any way we can and as she is in New Zealand it's not so simple so we were wondering if anyone would like to decorate a page - pink themed - maybe with a quote or two and mail it to Wendy? If you are concerned about the cost of mailing to New Zealand our own Ramie Ahlstrom has volunteered to send a pkg to Wendy the end of January. You could just mail your page to Ramie! Please email her for her address when you are ready to mail it. The page size would need to be approx 5 inches across and 7 3/4 inches down. If you are mailing directly to Wendy (email Wendy for her address) there is no time limit on when it needs to be done. Wendy has even offered to mail you an Artist Trading Card in return.

We would love to encourage Wendy with hugs in person but as that is rather difficult let's send her all our words of friendship and love and inspiration through the mail!

Thank you once again for bringing SSR into your home. Can you do me a favor and pass on the link to SSR to 5 people this month? We already know we're the best on the net, now it's time to tell everyone about what we have to offer! Just 5 people over the next month!

    Happy New Year!
