The Art of Tag

Cindy Roland - Stamping Design Team

Have you ever wondered where the idea of using tags in our artwork came from? Sorry, I don’t have the answer to that, but I am convinced that the first time it was used, we were all hooked. I am quoting from myself from a previous article I wrote on this subject.

Glitzy FruitTags are fascinating, they signify importance! They say pay attention to me! We all love to see what is written on a tag. Everything new we buy has a tag on it. Tags give us reassurance of the quality of something; they tell us how to care for what it is attached to. They give us information, identify, instruct and even warn!

I remember as a child, my parents got a brand new mattress set. There on the end of that mattress was the “warning” of removing that tag meant going to jail and being branded as a tag remover!! To this day I feel a twinge of guilt when I take one of those tags off. So, I make up for it by adding tags where there were none! Here is a tag that I titled as “Glitzy Fruit” no one would want to tear this off!

Groovy CatDon’t you feel lost if you receive a gift and it doesn’t have a tag attached to it? Who sent it? What’s in it? Why was it given to me? Is this really for me? There is no tag!!!

See, you need that tag to tell you something important! Even when you receive something from someone in secret, there is always a tag to tell you. It will say from your secret pal, or something on that order. You know it is important, and you know it is for you!!! The Tag may be the gift, as in this “Groovy Cat” tag. Wouldn’t she be a fun bookmark to have?

Wish Upon A StarOf course, just putting a tag on something is not enough for the creative ones! (You know who you are!) No, we must add more! A simple tag is merely the beginning. If we have a tag on our work, then we should add an embellishment to that tag.

Now we need to add another tag onto the original tag because we weren’t able to say everything we wanted to, and from there it goes on! This tag is an example of multiple tags and embellishments that I call “Wish Upon A Star.”

LibertyAlso the tag art I titled “Liberty”

Bird in the HandOur creative minds are limitless in what we can dream up. I am always surprised at what one artist will envision from another artist’s idea. It fascinates me and never ceases to amaze and inspire me. In case you haven’t noticed it before, start looking at how many different ways tags are used by your fellow creative souls. I see tags on cards, tags on scrapbook pages, dangling from art dolls. I have seen tags stacked on top of one another, lined up in a row, scattered about a page. Last, but certainly not least, tags that are all by themselves. Not attached to anything. This one I titled “Bird in the Hand.”

Just being a tag, in all its simplistic glory. Yes, I am having a love affair with tags, aren’t you?
