Using Collage sheets to make cards

This is a first for me. While I in Italy I did a lot of decoupage since it was all the rage there but never managed to produce anything worthy of display. And beautiful printed images like these are not readily available here in Hong Kong.

When I saw the sheets sent by Altered by Design the one with images of Father Christmas stood out – what perfect timing as I was going to work on my Christmas cards!

Inspired by a card in a Stamper’s Sampler magazine, the wings were a challenge since I did not have any ‘wing’ stamps. So I used a dragonfly stamp from my ‘unmounted and unidentifiable’ collection – I do have a lot of these stamps! The wings on the dragonfly stamp were not symmetrical so I used a brayer to make a negative image of the same set of wings. Wings stamped and embossed with black pigment ink and detail embossing powder on thick parchment paper. I then dry embossed and cut out the wings using the parchment craft technique which I have discussed later. The central vellum panel is a pre-printed piece. The gold outline on the red cardstock is done with a gold leaf pen.

Collage is difficult for me – I tend to use the left side of my brain more than the right – everything has to be symmetrical. But I was determined to try! I had to keep it simple so I just used a few Christmas stamps. Two of these are stamped and embossed with gold pigment ink and detail gold EP. The postage stamp was done in what I call the Dee Gruenig method – using markers directly on the stamp and huffing on it before stamping.

The image of this Father Christmas was on white so I decided to cut it out. The background is done on ribbed cardstock to give it some texture. I stippled Noel colours onto it. Then I used a marbling design stamp inked with shiny ink to give the crackled look. Again the small postage stamps applied with black pigment ink and detail EP.

This is a very simple card done with just two stamps and an image of Father Christmas from Altered by Design. The background is done with a marbling design stamp and shiny gold ink. The frame stamp is made with emerald ink and detail EP.

This is another image from Altered by Design on white that I cut out and applied to a background that was prepared by stippling Noel colours. The holly stamp is applied with shiny gold ink. After I glued down the image of Father Christmas, I applied one thin layer of Ranger glossy effects. Then I sprinkled Prisma glitter all over. Once it was dry, I applied a coat of Aleene’s instant decoupage to fix the glitter.

This card is one where I labored the most. The green background is stamped with a music stamp and holly leaves. A few spots of gold leaf are applied with a heat foil pen. The white border is made with a sheet of parchment paper and the pergamano method – which is a whole separate craft form in itself.

Below is an example of very basic Pergamano or parchment craft. The paper used for this craft is similar to vellum but much thicker – it can withstand a lot of poking and prodding, unlike vellum which tears very easily. Originally it used to be made of animal skin but now it is more eco friendly. Parchment craft uses the techniques of drawing, embossing, paper piercing, cutting, and in advanced form of the art, painting with special inks. The effects are simply beautiful.

This one last card is not for Christmas, but for the COTM on SSReflections group, also done with an image from Altered by Design. The background is stamped with light green dye ink and layered with green cardstock. The paisley frame is painted with red acrylic ink. I used gold ribbon from my stash. Sentiment stamp is inked with a dark green dye ink.
