Minimalist Layouts

As you flip through any magazine you will realize that a page that is simple often stands out among all the others. It could be just a block of color with a few words. Or maybe one large, stunning photograph that needs no words to convey its message. Perhaps a simple design on stark background.
So, too, every page you make does not have to be a masterpiece and yet will stand out in your album. Every page does not always need embellishments. A title is not always necessary. And while I do give great importance to journaling, there are times when you can actually do away with that, too. What you must do is make the page all about the photo. So the photograph has to be strong. These minimalist pages are simple and easy to make. And every once in a while it is good to change your pace, get those pages done, get a feeling of having accomplished something (aren’t we all trying to catch up?) and not have to worry about coming up the most perfect page yet.
Below are a few examples of minimalist pages.
With the two layouts below, as is evident, the photographs are big, the colours of the uniforms are bold and there really is not much need for journaling. I matched the colours from the photograph to some vibrant cardstock made by Worldwin. A title, contrasting cardstock for interest, some doodling with a gel pen and one embellishment finished the layouts.

For this layout, I decided to skip the title. It would have been something banal like ‘Pool Fun’ or some such. I could not be bothered racking my brain for this. Journaling was also not that important because it is just another of hundreds of photos of my son in the pool, but I just recorded the date and who we were playing with since that is not evident in the photos. I like this particular shot so I had it enlarged and kept the journaling very basic. All the attention is on the photo. The hand drawn water drop is my single “embellishment” because I did not have anything appropriate in size or theme.
This layout is just to show that minimalist does not necessarily mean ‘kiddy’ or primary colours (I am, however, a huge Mondrian fan!). A minimalist layout can be very chic and stylized. Just let your design sense and the photo guide you. Here I added the swirls as the embellishment. Again, some contrasting cardstock and a few words of journaling and I was done.
So have fun creating and do not be too hard on yourself!
